Project Treble and GSI (Generic System Image) are two significant innovations in the Android world.

Introduction Project Treble and GSI (Generic System Image) are two significant innovations in the Android world. Project Treble, introduced in Android 8.0 Oreo, aims at a modular system architecture that simplifies and speeds up the process of updating the operating system by device manufacturers. GSI, on the other hand, is a universal firmware that can be installed on any device that supports Project Treble. This innovation allows enthusiasts and developers to try new versions of Android without having to wait for an official update from the device manufacturer.

Personal experience

When I started my journey, my smartphone was equipped with the stock version of Android 7.1.1. I wanted to try something new, so I decided to install a custom firmware with Android 9.0. This experience gave me my first impressions of working with custom firmware and allowed me to better understand the process of installing them.

Android 9.0 Custom Firmware Installation Process:

  1. Firmware Custom ROM via SP Flash Tool: I downloaded the custom firmware from Android 9.0 and installed it with SP Flash Tool. Along with the custom firmware, TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) was installed.

Later, I had the option to install GSI firmware with Android 13.0. This move opened me up to new features and functions that are not available on the stock version. Although the installation process was not easy, the results fully met my expectations.

The process of installing GSI Android 13.0 firmware:

  1. Device Compatibility Check: Before installing the GSI firmware, I needed to make sure that my device supports Project Treble and is GSI compatible.

2. Downloading the GSI firmware: I found and downloaded the desired version of the GSI firmware of Android 13.0.

3. Installing via TWRP: I installed the firmware via TWRP using the commands to flash the system image.

4. Data formatting: After installing the firmware, I performed formatting on the data section to resolve possible conflicts and issues.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Project Treble and GSI

Advantages:

  • Faster OS updates: Thanks to its modular architecture, manufacturers can release updates faster.
  • Flexibility: GSI allows enthusiasts and developers to install new versions of Android without waiting for official releases.

Disadvantages:

  • Compatibility issues: Not all devices are fully compatible with GSI, which can cause installation issues.
  • Installation risks: The installation process can be complex and requires specialized knowledge, increasing the risk of damage to the device.

Tips and tricks

For those who are going to try custom firmware for the first time:

  • Carefully review the instructions for installing and checking for device compatibility.
  • Always back up your data before starting the installation process.
  • Be prepared for possible problems and know how to solve them.

Future Updates

I plan to continue using custom firmware and GSI to update my smartphone. This allows me to get the latest updates and features without having to wait for official releases from the device manufacturer.

Comparison

Performance and functionality of custom firmware and GSI compared to the stock version:

  • Custom Android 9.0 firmware: Provided improved performance and new features, however, required some effort to install.
  • GSI firmware Android 13.0: Provided the latest updates and features that were not available on the stock version, however, the search and installation process was even more complicated.
